As the founder of Chi Lab I thought it was fitting to provide a brief explanation of why Chi Lab began and where it is today.
Chi Lab was started in 2012 as a direct reflection of how I was experiencing life. After 15 years, I emerged from the ‘fish bowl’ of the professional sporting world with a spirit that was ready to explore.
Aussie Rules Football had given me some amazing highs, some staggering lows and everything in between. It was a platform for success and also for failure. It gave me fame and it gave me shame. But as the circus rolled on I was always quietly trying to make sense of it all, underneath a tsunami of anxiety and negative thinking.
Through all of this, I had already begun my exploration into the role of clean food in maximising my body’s performance and how that in turn impacted my thinking, as well as venturing into ancient Chinese ways of training, But it was once I hung my boots up for good that the real journey begun.
My late friend Peter Wright had just been diagnosed with a life threatening illness which is where the real questioning begun. We spent time with spiritual teachers, trained with monks in China and explored all of life's big questions, only to come back to the one clear message that life, death and everything in between is not to be judged or figured out, it is to be experienced fully with absolutely no expectation of outcomes.
Peter's inspiration right up until his last days was the driving force behind the birth of Chi Lab. He showed many people what it means to be truly alive right up until the day he died. Even when suffering and in pain, he showed us that it is not our circumstances that define us; it is how we act upon them that is the key.
As I evolved from this experience, I found the tools that really worked for me in order to balance my mind and body was the practice of qigong, eating clean natural foods, and simplifying my existence.
These were the underpinnings of Chi Lab; bringing balance, simplicity and truth into people's daily lives.
With the mind-body connection being so powerful, we at Chi Lab always work with our perceptions of the world first, as it is our thoughts that effect our bodies energy flow. As they say in qigong: clear mind and happy heart equals happy life. By making sure the physical body is open, flexible and fed real food that nourishes and replenishes every cell, we are building health and happiness from the inside out and not the other way around.
Once we get this balanced and in tune, it is time to look closely at our personal environment and how that shapes our overall wellbeing and performance. From technology to toxins to subtle human connections, our minds and bodies are constantly responding to environmental triggers, most far lower than our threshold to detect. The world is becoming faster and more demanding, which of course has a purpose, but not to the detriment of our health or happiness. So, by understanding and assessing our personal environment, we can then find ways to balance our connection to the world around us.
Chi Lab is here to help you in whatever way we can to maximise your life experience and to help you understand that in the end it is all just a game. You get to decide how to play.
